SPEED READING
The Problem
Some people never begin a novel, knowing it will take too long
to finish. Some are buried in work-related material. Others complain
that their mind wanders so much that by the time they reach the
bottom of the page, they’ve forgotten what they read at
the top.
The Solution
Most readers with adequate word identification and comprehension
skills can learn to read two to three times faster with improved
concentration and retention of what they’ve read. Dr. Gates
teaches students to:
- zero in on the most important meaning-bearing parts of text,
- use hand motions to facilitate movement through text, and
- organize the information to secure comprehension and retention.
Once techniques are learned, readers can apply them when they
want to. There are times when we want to savor written language
slowly. Having various styles of reading puts the reader in charge
of the material.
Following an evaluation of reading skills and rate, Dr. Gates
will tailor a program to your needs and materials. Students practice
at home and meet in the office with Dale to learn new techniques
and overcome any obstacles.
"I used to read everything the same way. Now I feel like
I’ve got a ‘wardrobe’ of reading skills. I
can read my textbooks one way and my magazines another way. My
comprehension has always been good, but I read more now.” (S.
